A day at Tomo Campbell’s Studio with Taylor Howes
Studio visits are always special, a chance to see ‘behind the curtain’ into an artist’s world. When I was given the opportunity to take Lead Designer of Taylor Howes, Irina Vladmirova, to Tomo Campbell’s studio, I knew this was going to be an experience to remember.
Irina and I connected when I was brought in as Art Adviser on a project at 1 Grosvenor Square, and have been collaborating on Taylor Howes projects ever since. Renowned internationally for creating interiors for the Ultra High Net Worth audience, Taylor Howes deliver luxurious elegance with passion and creativity. After browsing through their stunning portfolio and discussing design and style ethos with Irina, I knew Tomo's work was perfect, and was eager for Irina to see it.
Tomo Campbell is a young visionary whose paintings embody the concept of colliding worlds, seamlessly blending the past, present, and future. His creations shift between abstraction and figuration, woven through with recurring motifs reminiscent of old master paintings and medieval tapestries.
Tomo recently moved to an idyllic 16 th century house in the Essex countryside, where his young family now enjoy the space and freedom of the beautiful gardens and fields. Tomo met us at the station, and driving us to his house, pointed out key landmarks such as his local pub (where he has his own pint glass behind the bar!). The house and gardens were peppered with builders and gardeners bringing Tomo and his wife’s’ visions to life, and despite the work, it was a truly enchanting place. Irina and I had serious house envy!
On to the studio – quite literally where the magic happens. We were shown his works in progress of varying size, and Tomo shared his working process and inspiration. He was expecting a paint delivery that day and said that this was often a starting point to inspire the next work. The new paints are tumbled onto his paint table, while the older tubes become buried beneath.
