Artroom London's Personal Collection Features at Charleston

Artroom London is incredibly excited to announce that four paintings from our personal collection are in the new exhibition at Charleston in Lewes, Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece: An Untold Story.

Vanita Barany with Emily Hill, curator of this exhibition

Women well known in the Bloomsbury circles, Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece’s secret artistic collaboration and lifelong romantic partnership remained hidden for decades. This exhibition explores the untold story of a remarkable duo exploring their life through paintings and drawings, works which were created by Hepworth but exhibited under the signature of her lifelong partner, Preece. Here, the artists are recognised as collaborators and co-conspirators for the first time.

At Artroom London, we are huge fans of the Bloomsbury Group, but sadly the price tag for works by artists such as Vanessa Bell or Duncan Grant are beyond our budget and bought vicariously for our clients. The first work we bought by Dorothy Hepworth; painted very much in the same oeuvre as works by the Bloomsbury Group appealed in subject painterly style and palette. We had no idea of the fascinating story linked to the painting of the secret lives of the artist, her lover and Stanley Spencer. This made the work all the more appealing and we began to search for more works by her. Having created our collection, we’re proud to loan four of our paintings for this exhibition.

With the exhibition ‘Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece: An Untold Story’ and a book ‘The Secret Art of Dorothy Hepworth aka Patricia Preece’ written by Dr Denys Wilcox on the market; it’s clear our modest artworks have become a sound investment.

The exhibition runs from 29th March until September and we urge you to go and enjoy the works and the story behind them.
